Holiday Recycling: Keeping it Green

The holidays are a great time for celebration.  It’s the time of year when family and friends come together, sometimes traveling from long distances. What’s not to celebrate? People around the country will be having a good time and not worrying about those everyday mundane things that normally occupy them throughout the year.  Although its always nice to let loose a little, we should always remember that the environment cannot be put on hold.  Recycling during the holidays is just as important, if not more important, in the ongoing battle of keeping our planet healthy for future generations.

So, without further adieu, I’d like to provide a few tips for Holiday Recycling:

- Recycle Your Gift Wrappers: We see it every year: the explosion of wrapping paper that flies across the house as excited kids voraciously dig into their presents.  Just because so much is going on, many of us simply collect all of those gift wrappers in a bag and forget to separate it for recycling.  That wrapping paper adds up – if every household does its part in recycling this it can make a big difference.

- Recycle Your Christmas Tree: Yes, your Christmas tree can be recycled and put to good use elsewhere.  If you bring your tree to the right recycling center it will get a new job after displaying ornaments and providing a home for your presents.    Your tree might be placed in a wildlife sanctuary to provide refuge for animals, or re-processed to create mulch.

- Recycle Your Holiday Cards: Just like gift wrapping, holiday cards can add up when put together (especially if you have twelve brothers and sisters, all with kids of their own, who are keen on sending cards for every occasion).  It’s as easy as separating the cards and making sure they end up in the recycling bin.

- Recycle Old Toys: Every holiday season, tons of old, broken, chipped and ripped toys get replaced with new models – the fancy, shiny, brand new items that will put a smile on any kid’s face.  This doesn’t just happen with kids, or toys.  Adults also get new gifts that replace their old items: a flat screen TV to replace that old boxy set or a brand new washer drier pair that puts the old clunky ones to shame.  We don’t often think about recycling these old, large items – but it’s just as important as the smaller things.  Although it can be a pain to haul our old toys out of the house and to the right recycling facility, it can make a big difference and is definitely worth it.

Green Junk Removal & Services

How often have you said you want to do something to help the environment, but never really got around to it? Many people certainly want to give back to our planet, but simply don’t have the time to do it.  Although there are everyday things you can do to help the green cause like recycling, there are also services that you can utlize that have a green outlook. These are the businesses that don’t only care about making money; they also feel that they have an obligation to hand over a cleaner environment to future generations.  These are people that know that the footprint they leave in this world will be one that lasts forever. The monetary difference between using an eco-friendly service and a standard one is often negligable, so why not help our environment while also getting some great work done?

Here are a few service sectors where you can make the decision to go green:

Green Junk Removal:  If you need to have your junk hauled out of your home or business, you should consider using a service that will have a low impact on our environment.  A green junk removal service will make sure that much of the materials they pick up will be disposed of in an eco-friendly manner.  This means they’ll avoid placing materials in a landfill, and instead make sure that much of the junk ends up getting recycled.

Green Builders & Contractors: You can get an addition to your home or even build a beautiful new house without harming the environment around us.  Many eco-friendly contractors will make it a point to use sustainable materials to build your house.  These materials and the waste they create will have a low impact on the local environment.  You can also considering having your green contractor retrofit your home to be energy efficient by installing the right insulation and even utilizing solar panels.

Green Pest Control:  Incecticides and pest control methods can release some of the worst and most toxic chemicals into our atmosphere, not to mention expose your family to a very dangerous environment.  Consider using a pest control service that specializes in utilizing eco-friendly chemicals made from organic ingredients that are safe for your family, and have a low impact on the environment around you.

Green Travel:  When you are planning a vacation and looking for an affordable yet luxurious lodging option, it’s often difficult to consider the eco-friendly factor.  Today however, there are many hotels, resorts and lodging options that are built with sustainability in mind.  Some hotels have a local organic garden for their restauraunt’s greens or make use of water-saving laundry options.  Next time you are booking your lodging, be sure to keep an eye out for any green options.

Green Cleaning:  It’s hard to find a good home cleaning service, let alone a green one.  Keep in mind that many cleaning services use toxic chemicals to clean your house – its very easy to make the switch over to an eco-friendly cleaning service that uses chemical free, organic, and safe cleaning supplies.
